Building the grid

Jig for grid

I call these "frames," but the more traditional term is "grid." Nonetheless, above is the jig I made out of 3/4-inch plywood that will hold the sides of the frame square.

Drywall screws in frame

Each corner of a frame is attached with two No. Eight, 3-inch drywall screws. After I built the prototype, I realized I needed to counter-sink these, so bought a counter-sink bit at the hardware store.

Two sides in the jig

An overview of a frame during its construction. Note the corners of the frame are on small scraps of plywood to keep everything square (we hope).

Frame prepped for middle stay

The center of the frame takes another 1x4, which is held in place by a clamp while the holes are drilled and countersunk and the screws are fastened.
